Project financed by the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation for Development (AECID) and the Government of Navarra in collaboration with the Government of Tunisia through the agency, Agence Nationale pour la Maîtrise de lŽEnergie (ANME). The project started at the end of 2004 and was finished at the beginning of 2009. Wind maps are generated in GIS format at 1 km x 1 km resolution at different heights: 10m, 60m, 80m, and 100m. Validation: The wind map has been validated at the 17 meteorological stations installed for this project and also with 19 selected stations operated by Institut National de la Météorologie (with measurements at 10m). The results show a very accurate estimation of the average wind speed. The global Bias (error calculated between the calculated wind speed and the measured wind speed at the meteorological stations) is 0 m/s at 10m height, 0.04 m/s at 20m height and 0.23 m/s at 40m height. Wind map methodology: Mesoscale model SKIRON was used to simulate the wind over Tunisia. 5 years of hourly simulations were used to build the map. This model is based on the ETA model developed by the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP)of the USA. The model is operational since 1993. The methodology to calculate wind maps with SKIRON was developed between CENER and the University of Athens, and it has been validated in Spain, Portugal, Poland and Tunisia.
