YDNP landscape character areas (ydnpa_inspire:ydnpa_landscape_character_areas)

The Yorkshire Dales National Park Landscape Character Assessment was carried out by consultants with input from National Park staff, and was completed in 2001. It was undertaken in order to provide the National Park Authority with an objective and independent assessment of landscape character in the Park. The Assessment identifies 40 distinct landscape units, reflecting individual dales and upland watersheds. Each of these distinct areas is classified and described, having regard to overall landscape character and to the key characteristics that build that character. At a broader level there are summary descriptions of the landscape character of the Yorkshire Dales as a whole and of the main physical, historic and cultural influences that have shaped the Dales and given it its particular identity. The Landscape Character Assessment was endorsed by the Authority in March 2002, and has been used subsequently to inform a range of policies and projects within the National Park. The GIS layer was created to show the boundary of each of the 40 landscape units. The Data behind these MapInfo boundaries shows “area_name” (eg. “Langstrothdale”), “area_no” (e.g. “31”), “area_ha” (e.g. “522”) and “notes” (e.g. “Wharfedale & Littondale”).

This is the habitat map information fixed at Feb 2015.

YDNPA Tree preservation orders (ydnpa_inspire:ydnpa_tpo)

A tree preservation order (TPO) is an order made by the local authority, in this case the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, on a tree or number of trees that makes it an offence to carry out any work, e.g. cut down, top, lop, up root, wilfully damage or wilfully destroy a protected tree, without the Authority’s prior written consent. Cutting the roots of a protected tree is also potentially damaging and will require the Authority’s consent. TPO’s take the form of an individual tree preservation order, a group TPO, an area TPO or a woodland TPO. A typical TPO would be served on tree or number of trees which are of significance to the local environment whilst providing a benefit to the public through visual amenity. The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority has powers to serve TPO’s under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 and the Town and Country (Tree Preservation) (England) Regulations 2012, and by Law, written consent must be given by the local authority before works to a tree with a preservation order can take place.
