Soil Systems of Italy (cncp:soil_system)

The soil information systems of Italy is made up of a hierarchy of geodatabases, which includes soil regions, aimed at correlating the soil geography of Italy with the other European countries, soil systems, for the correlation of soil typological units (STU) at the national level, and soil sub‐systems, for the regional level. Aim of this work was to derive a map of the soil systems of Italy using the corresponding geodatabase. The information was collected and harmonized for the whole country from different sources, mainly with the collaboration of the Italian soil regional services. The STU were formed on the basis of many dozens of thousands of soil observations, collected in the regional and national databases. The soil systems database structure is composed of a relational database, containing information on soil profiles and typological units (STU and STS, soil typological subunits), and a geodatabase, with polygons at reference scale variable from 1:500,000 to 1:1,000,000. The geographic database contains information about physiography, morphogenetic processes, river drainage network, lithology, land cover, and land components (LCs) of the soil systems
