The dataset is a product of the Geological Map of New Zealand 1: 1 000 000 project and was produced by GNS Science. The dataset is stored in an ESRI vector geodatabase and exported to Geoserver and ArcGIS Server. The dataset comprises arcs with each arc having attributes describing the type of contact, its name, exposure and accuracy. The data should not be used at scales beyond that for which it was prepared. The spatial accuracy is estimated to be no better than +/- 500 m.

The central part of the South Island of New Zealand contains an array of landforms produced by the action of glaciers, spanning from prehistoric time through to the present day. Glaciers are expressions of atmospheric climatic conditions, and their advances and retreats, as recorded by distinctive landforms, provide a measure of past climate changes. As one of the few landmasses in the Southern Hemisphere, and especially one where glaciers have had a persistent presence, New Zealand's glacier record is an important piece of information for enquiry into the natural behaviour of Earth's climate system. The central South Island record benefits from having modern glaciers, whose historic behaviour provides an analogue for the interpretation of the prehistoric record. The central South Island glacial geomorphological (CSIGG) digital database documents these landforms. This dataset was used to generate the printed 1:100,000 geomorphological map, on a five-sheet large-format cut-up, that was enclosed in GNS Science Monograph 27 (Barrell et al., 2011).

NZ Topo50 Maps (r:x767)

The Topo50 map series provides topographic mapping for the New Zealand mainland, the Chatham Islands, and offshore islands at 1:50,000 scale. Along with the paper-based Topo50 map series, digital images of the maps are also publicly available. Georeferenced raster digital images are provided at a resolution of 300 DPI. Georeferencing allows adjacent maps to be accurately and automatically aligned within GIS systems.
