El pendent és un element clau del terreny per al desencadenament d’allaus. Aquest tret combinat amb la vegetació (ortofoto), la freqüència d’allaus (observacions d’allaus) i la classificació del terreny exposat a allaus constitueixen una eina de gran utilitat per a la gestió de les activitats en muntanya (realització d’itineraris, traçats de curses d’esquí de muntanya, gestió d’activitats hivernals, entre d’altres).

D’oest a est des de l’origen és defineixen franges verticals de 5 km que s’identifiquen per dos dígits començant per 01 fins 56. De nord a sud des de l’origen és defineixen franges horitzontals de 5 km que s’identifiquen per dues de lletres essent la primera AA i la darrera BZ. Cada cel•la de la quadrícula de 5 km de costat o quadrant és el resultat de la intersecció d’una franja vertical i una altra horitzontal, s’identifica amb la concatenació dels codis: dos dígits i dues lletres.

Cadascun dels quadrants de 25 km2, es subdivideix en 25 cel·les quadrades d’1 km2. Cada cel·la de la quadrícula d’1 km de costat o secció es codifica d’oest a est i de nord a sud amb dos dígits de 01 a 25. El codi SOC per ubicar objectes o fenòmens és un codi únic per a cada quadrat d’1 km de costat constituït per la concatenació del codi de quadrant i el de secció.
