AGROTOPO is a national spatial soil information system elaborated, managed and served by the Research Institute for Soil cience and Agricultural Chemistry of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (RISSAC HAS). Agroecological mapping units were delineated in the frame of the project: “Assessment of the Agro-ecological potential of Hungary 1978-1981” led by RISSAC HAS. The mapping units as polygons were characterized by 10 digit identifiers and were compiled and displayed on 1:100.000 scale topographic map sheets (85 map sheets cover the whole country). The regional scale, digital AGROTOPO system was elaborated between 1989 and 1992. It consists of ~3500 soil mapping units (SMUs as polygons) which are characterised by 9 basic soil parameters. Further, more complex soil features (e.g.: susceptibility to acidification, water regime, excess water hazard) were derived by digital functional soil mapping.
