This service gives access to the record holdings of the Archaeological Survey of Ireland (commonly known as the Sites and Monuments Record), National Monuments Service, Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. These contain the records of all known monuments pre-dating AD 1700 that have been brought to its attention and also includes a selection of monuments from the post-AD 1700 period. There are in excess of 148,000 records in the database and over 136,000 of these relate to archaeological monuments. Records that do not refer to 'monuments' are designated 'Redundant record' and are retained in the archive as they may relate to features that were once considered to be monuments but which on investigation proved otherwise. These redundant records may also refer to errors in the record system. The Archaeological Survey of Ireland operates a flat or simplified hierarchical 'term list' for classification. While every effort has been made to ensure consistency of use, the terms should be considered as a fairly authoritative guideline only. Please note that the ITM co-ordinates supplied were derived from IG geo-referenced OS 6-inch mapping and their accuracy is limited to this scale. Errors may ensue should the user apply the co-ordinates to larger scale maps.
