The 1:1,000,000 Geological Map of New Zealand was published in 1972 by the New Zealand Geological Survey, and digitally captured in the mid 1990s with minor topographic and editorial corrections. Limited updates were made to the dataset in 2004 by P.J. Forsyth and N. Mortimer. The dataset comprises polygons with each polygon having a lithostratigraphic description. The dataset will be superceded in 2014 by a new edition generalised from the QMAP 1:250,000 Geological Map of New Zealand project.
