The National Rock Properties WMS delivers analytical data and supporting geological metdata from Geoscience Australia's Rock Properties Database. Data in the web service include scalar properties such as magnetic susceptibility, density, porosity, natural gamma, and electrical and seismic properties, as well as vector measurements such as remanent magnetisation. A companion Web Feature Service is also provided by Geoscience Australia.

Available map layers (12)

Bulk density (bulk_density)

Located measurements from the Geoscience Australia Rock Properties database. Density is included as a generic description of the mass per unit volume of a material derived by the Archimedes method (dry bulk density, wet bulk density, grain bulk density), or where a more accurate description, or the method of determination, is not given.

Chargeability (chargeability)

Located measurements from the Geoscience Australia Rock Properties database. Chargeability (the ability of a rock mass to hold a direct current charge) determined by induced polarisation (IP) techniques or by airborne or ground electromagnetic techniques either on the ground or on drill core or outcrop samples in a laboratory.

Electrical conductivity (electrical_conductivity)

Located measurements from the Geoscience Australia Rock Properties database. Electrical conductivity (the ability of the Earth to conduct an electrical current) determined by electromagnetic induction by a wireline logging technique, by an airborne or ground electromagnetic technique or on outcrop or drill core samples in a laboratory.

Electrical resistivity (electrical_resistivity)

Located measurements from the Geoscience Australia Rock Properties database. Electrical resistivity (the ability of the Earth to impede an electrical current) determined by borehole wireline logging using a contact or induction technique, on the ground or on drill core or outcrop samples in a laboratory.

Gamma bulk density (gamma_bulk_density)

Located measurements from the Geoscience Australia Rock Properties database. Gamma bulk density determined by a bore hole gamma density tool, e.g. long-spaced density (LSD), short-spaced density (SSD) high resolution density (HRD) or bed resolution detector (BRDG) or by measurements on an outcrop sample or drill core in a laboratory using a gamma density technique.

Koenigsberger ratio (koenigsberger_ratio)

Located measurements from the Geoscience Australia Rock Properties database. The Koenigsberger ratio (Q ratio) is defined as the ratio in a rock of remanent magnetization to the induced magnetization in the Earth's field. Q = NRM (in A/m) / (K (in SI) * H (in A/m), where K is the magnetic susceptibility in SI units and H is the local geomagnetic field (generally based on the International Geomagnetic Reference Field value at the sample site and at the sampling date).

Magnetic susceptibility (magnetic_susceptibility)

Located measurements from the Geoscience Australia Rock Properties database. Magnetic susceptibility is the degree to which a material can be magnetised in an external magnetic field, measured as a dimensionless proportionality constant.

Natural gamma (natural_gamma)

Located measurements from the Geoscience Australia Rock Properties database. A measure of the natural gamma-ray emission of a material expressed as total counts. Normally related to the major rock-forming elements K, Th and U.

Porosity (porosity)

Located measurements from the Geoscience Australia Rock Properties database. Porosity determined as a result of density measurements using the Archimedes method, by a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) technique, by a gamma density technique, by a neutron density technique, by a computed (X-ray) tomography technique, by an acoustic technique or by a thin-section technique in a bore hole or on outcrop samples or drill core in a laboratory.

Remanent magnetisation (remanent_magnetisation)

Located measurements from the Geoscience Australia Rock Properties database. Remanent magnetisation (here assumed to be the natural remanent magnetisation) is the permanent magnetisation of a rock material, attained over the material's lifetime.

Sonic velocity (sonic_velocity)

Located measurements from the Geoscience Australia Rock Properties database. Sonic velocity in rock determined by in situ techniques, e.g. a check shot in a borehole, or by ultrasonic techniques on drill core or outcrop samples in a laboratory.

Temperature (temperature)

Located measurements from the Geoscience Australia Rock Properties database. Rock mass temperature determined by borehole wireline logging. Temperature includes measured or derived rock properties including heat flow (the rate at which a rock mass conducts heat), thermal anisotropy (the directional dependence of heat flow in a rock mass) and heat production (the amount of heat generated by a rock body dependant on its radioisotope content), determined in a bore hole or on drill core or outcrop samples in a laboratory.
