This data highlights the path that the Plutonium bomb 'Fatman' traveled from Kirtland Airforce base to its utilization on Nagasaki at 11:03 August 9, 1945. A Doublas C-54 Skymaster transported the bomb from Kirtland Air Force base in New Mexico to Pearl Harbor and then on to Tinian Island. The trip began on July 26 and ended on the 28. It remained on Tinian Island until August 9. When the Japanese did not surrender after the Hiroshima bombing President Harry Truman commanded the Plutonium bomb be utilized against the Japanese city of Kokura, in order to end the Pacific Theater of World War II. On August 9, 1945 a B-29 Superfortress circled Kokura three times but was unable to see the city through thick smoke and clouds. It proceeded to its secondary target the city of Nagasaki and deployed the weapon at 11 am August 9, 1945.
AtomicJourneyDir (geonode:AtomicJourneyDir)
This mapstory shows the methods of transportation for the Fatman and Little boy atomic weapons in July of 1945. The differences in transportation can easily be attributed to their method of weaponization. The plutonium bomb utilized an implosion mechanization which would not be affected by air travel. The train and ship was a much safer way to transport the weapon across such distances.

DC Dot-Density 1970 to 2010 (geonode:DC_DDTS_WGS0)
This is point pattern data representing 100 persons per point. The totals were derived from US Census data on race and ethnicity for the years 1980, 1990, 2000, and 2010. due to the classification of hispanic as a cultural attribute instead of a racial attribute, the number of hispanic persons per census tract was subtracted from the total tract population. then the percentage of each other race was derived from the original total population and number of each race. this percentage then created revised totals for non-hispanic individuals. This assumes an even distribution of hispanics across race, which may not be the case. additionally, the division of the total population by 100 to derive number of points was rounded to account for discrete point counts.

Dams around the World (geonode:GRanD_dams_v1_1)
The Global Reservoir and Dam Database, Version 1 (Revision 01) contains 6,862 records of reservoirs and their associated dams with a cumulative storage capacity of 6,197 cubic km. The dams were geospatially referenced and assigned to polygons depicting reservoir outlines at high spatial resolution. Dams have multiple attributes, such as name of the dam and impounded river, primary use, nearest city, height, area and volume of reservoir, and year of construction (or commissioning). While the main focus was to include all dams associated with reservoirs that have a storage capacity of more than 0.1 cubic kilometers, many smaller dams and reservoirs were added where data were available. The data were compiled by Lehner et al. (2011) and are distributed by the Global Water System Project (GWSP) and by the Columbia University Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN). DestinationLoc2 (geonode:AtomicJourneyLoc0)
This mapstory shows the methods of transportation for the Fatman and Little boy atomic weapons in July of 1945. The differences in transportation can easily be attributed to their method of weaponization. The plutonium bomb utilized an implosion mechanism to active that bomb which would not be affected by air travel. The uranium weapon utilized a gun method by shooting a uranium bullet into the enriched uranium that would result in a detonation. The train and ship was a much safer way to transport the weapon across such distances.

Events (geonode:events0)
An extremist militant group has taken over number of major Iraqi cities at breakneck speed, but the threat it poses to Iraq and the world are unlike any terrorist threat we've seen before. The White House refers to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria as a terrorist organization. The group's name, however, reveals more about the nature of its aspirations. To reach its goal of establishing a caliphate in Iraq and Syria, ISIS has built itself to resemble a government, complete with a military, a police force, and public-works projects. Rather than using targeted attacks to further specific goals, ISIS is waging full-out war on the Iraqi government in a campaign to capture territory, then governing those territories in an organized fashion. ISIS is already laying down new laws in Iraq. Last week, the group handed out a "Contract of the City" to residents of the northern Niniveh province, where Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city, is located. The Washington Post translated the contract's 16 main points, in which ISIS threatens to punish thieves by amputation, promises to sentence nonbelievers to death, and urges women to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.

For details please refer to the Technical Documentation which is provided with the data.

Gini Index (geonode:Gini_New)
This dataset shows the GINI Index of different available countries from 1978 to 2011. This information was obtained from the World Bank Development Research data repositories. Gini index measures the extent to which the distribution of income or consumption expenditure among individuals or households within an economy deviates from a perfectly equal distribution. A Lorenz curve plots the cumulative percentages of total income received against the cumulative number of recipients, starting with the poorest individual or household. The Gini index measures the area between the Lorenz curve and a hypothetical line of absolute equality, expressed as a percentage of the maximum area under the line. Thus a Gini index of 0 represents perfect equality, while an index of 100 implies perfect inequality.
Global Adult Literacy Rates (geonode:Literacy_Rates)
"Adult (15+) literacy rate (%). Total is the percentage of the population age 15 and above who can, with understanding, read and write a short, simple statement on their everyday life. Generally, ‘literacy’ also encompasses ‘numeracy’, the ability to make simple arithmetic calculations. This indicator is calculated by dividing the number of literates aged 15 years and over by the corresponding age group population and multiplying the result by 100." - (http://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SE.ADT.LITR.ZS)

Holocene Thermal Maximum (geonode:htm_kaufman_2)
The spatio-temporal pattern of peak Holocene warmth (Holocene thermal maximum, HTM) is traced over 140 sites across the Western Hemisphere of the Arctic (0–180°W; north of ∼60°N). Paleoclimate inferences based on a wide variety of proxy indicators provide clear evidence for warmer-than-present conditions at 120 of these sites. At the 16 terrestrial sites where quantitative estimates have been obtained, local HTM temperatures (primarily summer estimates) were on average 1.6±0.8°C higher than present (approximate average of the 20th century), but the warming was time-transgressive across the western Arctic. As the precession-driven summer insolation anomaly peaked 12–10 ka (thousands of calendar years ago), warming was concentrated in northwest North America, while cool conditions lingered in the northeast. Alaska and northwest Canada experienced the HTM between ca 11 and 9 ka, about 4000 yr prior to the HTM in northeast Canada. The delayed warming in Quebec and Labrador was linked to the residual Laurentide Ice Sheet, which chilled the region through its impact on surface energy balance and ocean circulation.

This data highlights the path that the Plutonium bomb 'Fatman' traveled from Kirtland Air-force base to its utilization on Nagasaki at 11:03 August 9, 1945. On August 9, 1945 a B-29 Super fortress circled Kokura three times but was unable to see the city through thick smoke and clouds. It proceeded to its secondary target the city of Nagasaki and deployed the weapon at 11 am August 9, 1945.

They increase the pace of conservation, so more land and natural resources get protected. They also enhance the quality of conservation, so the most important lands get protected using the best practices in the business. And they ensure the permanence of conservation by creating the laws and resources needed to defend protected land over time. The Alliance is based in Washington, D.C., and has several regional offices. Their goals include (a) Dramatically expand the pace of land conservation (through tax incentives) (b) Build strong land trusts (c) Defend the permanence of conservation easements and (d) Ensure that the work of land trusts is as strategically directed as possible. The map includes information about the expansion of land trusts across time and space in the United States.

Minimum Annual Wage (geonode:MinimumWage2)
Real hourly and annual minimum wages are statutory minimum wages converted into a common hourly and annual pay period for the 25 countries for which they are available. The resulting estimates are deflated by national Consumer Price Indices (CPI). The data are then converted into a common currency unit using either US $ current exchange rates or US $ Purchasing Power Parities (PPPs) for private consumption expenditures. Real hourly and annual minimum wages are calculated first by deflating the series using the consumer price index taking 2013 as the base year. The series are then converted into a common currency unit (USD) using Purchasing Power Parities (PPPs) for private consumption expenditures in 2013.

Increases in global integration is greatly affected by the flow of people from one culture to another. this is often accomplished though migration. While it is difficult to measure migration perceptively due to its multifaceted characteristics (economic vs refugees vs family reunification, etc) and lack/poor quality of national statistics, net migration offers an overview of major sending and receiving countries. This data was collected by the World DataBank and covers a 40 year period 1962 to 2012 in 5 year intervals.

Oceania East Roads (geonode:gROADS_v1_oceania_east)
The Global Roads Open Access Data Set, Version 1 (gROADSv1) was developed under the auspices of the CODATA Global Roads Data Development Task Group. The data set combines the best available roads data by country into a global roads coverage, using the UN Spatial Data Infrastructure Transport (UNSDI-T) version 2 as a common data model. All country road networks have been joined topologically at the borders, and many countries have been edited for internal topology. Source data for each country are provided in the documentation, and users are encouraged to refer to the readme file for use constraints that apply to a small number of countries. Because the data are compiled from multiple sources, the date range for road network representations ranges from the 1980s to 2010 depending on the country (most countries have no confirmed date), and spatial accuracy varies. The baseline global data set was compiled by the Information Technology Outreach Services (ITOS) of the University of Georgia. Old West Ghost Points (geonode:shootouts20)
This data represents the location and year of some of the most famous American old west gunfights of all time. The data mostly appears in the southwest United States but there is one gunfight in Alaska. The time range is from 1827 to 1918. I created this data set based on information I got from wikipedia and legendsofamerica.com. I brought the name, year, and location information from my sources into an Excel file and then brought it into GIS to make it into a shapefile before I uploaded it to MapStory. This storylayer was created to serve as ghost points.

Osprey Migration Data (geonode:FullOspreyData1)
Osprey Toxicology To date, we have accessed about 40 nests, drawn blood samples (for heavy metal analysis) and banded 330 nestlings. This makes our Osprey project one of the largest and most comprehensive of its kind. Results are troubling, with many nestlings showing mercury levels 100 times higher than what would be considered toxic in humans. We are proud to be partnering with several local experts, Uni- versity of Montana researchers Dr. Heiko Langner and Dr. John- ny Moore (Environmental Biogeochemistry Lab) and Dr. Erick Greene (Division of Biological Sciences and Wildlife Biology), to closely examine the causes, locations and possible ef- fects of mining-related and possibly atmospheric contaminants on Ospreys and the ecosystems that support them. Migration data ranges from the Bitterroot Valley in Montana to the Gulf Coast in Central Mexico. And another from the Bitterroot Valley to the Pacific Coast near the Nicaraguan/Costa Rican border--a distance of over 3,000 miles! http://www.raptorview.org/osprey-project.html

Pages 2K Consortium (geonode:pages_2k)
Past global climate changes had strong regional expression. To elucidate their spatio-temporal pattern, we reconstructed past temperatures for seven continental-scale regions during the past one to two millennia. The most coherent feature in nearly all of the regional temperature reconstructions is a long-term cooling trend, which ended late in the nineteenth century. At multi-decadal to centennial scales, temperature variability shows distinctly different regional patterns, with more similarity within each hemisphere than between them. There were no globally synchronous multi-decadal warm or cold intervals that define a worldwide Medieval Warm Period or Little Ice Age, but all reconstructions show generally cold conditions between AD 1580 and 1880, punctuated in some regions by warm decades during the eighteenth century. The transition to these colder conditions occurred earlier in the Arctic, Europe and Asia than in North America or the Southern Hemisphere regions. Recent warming reversed the long-term cooling; during the period AD 1971–2000, the area-weighted average reconstructed temperature was higher than any other time in nearly 1,400 years.

The Global Reservoir and Dam (GRanD) Database, Version 1.1 contains 6,862 records of reservoirs and their associated dams with a cumulative storage capacity of 6,197 cubic km. The reservoirs were delineated from high spatial resolution satellite imagery and are available as polygon shape files. The only attribute for the reservoirs is the area of the reservoir. The associated dams data set includes multiple attributes such as name of the dam and the impounded river, primary use, nearest city, area, and year of construction (or commissioning). While the main focus was to include all reservoirs with a storage capacity of more than 0.1 cubic kilometers, many smaller reservoirs were added where data were available. The data were compiled by Lehner et al. (2011) and are distributed by the Global Water System Project (GWSP) and by the Columbia University Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN). Updated data for 27 countries and 6 smaller geographic entities were assembled by Columbia University's Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN), with a focus largely on developing countries with the poorest data coverage. http://sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/data/set/groads-global-roads-open-access-v1

Russia (geonode:Russia_Merge)
ON MARCH 18th Russia annexed Crimea, marking the first time the country expanded its borders since the cold war. Yet it has form. The 20th century was a period of ever-changing national boundaries, affiliations and spheres of influence. At the start of the second world war, the then Soviet Union’s territory extended into modern-day Belarus and Ukraine, and included Crimea. By war’s end, the entirety of both countries became a part of the USSR, as well as the Baltic states. During the cold war, the iron curtain descended over Eastern Europe—and stayed there until the Soviet Union’s dissolution in 1991. The map of Europe remained unchanged in terms of Russian territory until this month. A quarter-century after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the hungry Russian bear is back. This map shows the troubled history of Russia and its neighbours. The information is obtained from http://www.economist.com/node/21599438?fsrc=scn%2Ffb%2Fwl%2Fdc%2Fhammerandstyle

Sea Turtle Stranding in Florida (geonode:ST_Proj)
Coordinated by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission - Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI), the Florida Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network (STSSN) is responsible for gathering standardized data on stranded marine turtles throughout the state. The Florida STSSN functions as a part of an eighteen state network led by NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). In Florida, strandings are documented by FWRI staff biologists and by a network of permitted participants located around the state. Live strandings are rescued and transported to properly permitted rehabilitation facilities. Data from strandings are collected on a standardized reporting form and include date, species, location, carapace length and width, carcass condition, carcass disposition, and information on anomalies (e.g., entanglement, propeller damage, fibropapillomas). Additionally, certain carcasses are regularly collected by FWRI staff for gross or detailed necropsy. Each week, FWRI reports Florida strandings to NMFS as a part of a management plan that is intended to reduce the incidental take of turtles in the shrimp fishery. FWRI also generates monthly and yearly stranding summary reports to monitor mortality and to detect and describe any unusual stranding events. Stranding data collected through the Florida STSSN have been used extensively in the identification of mortality factors and in the development of recovery actions (e.g., Turtle Excluder Device (TED) requirements, gill net regulations).
Seal Migration (geonode:SealMigration)
This data shows the migration of the Gray Seal named Gracie. Gray seals are part of the "true seal" family, Phocidae. True seals lack external ear flaps and have short forelimbs that result in limited locomotion on land. Gray seals are sexually "dimorphic" with males reaching up to 10 ft (3 m) in length and 880 lbs (400 kg) and females reaching up to 7.5 ft (2.3 m) in length and 550 lbs (250 kg). Gray seal coloration varies by geographic region and sex of the animal. Females live up to 35 years, while males live up to 25 years in the wild.

This map portrays a history of Elvis Presley's live performances during his comeback concert tours beginning in the late 1960's till his death. Presley popularity had waned as he pursued his acting career in the 1960's. Elvis was determined to gain respect as an actor but the movies he was cast involved corny typecasting. He returned to the stage in Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas in the fall of 1969 where his popularity soared and his legend was rebuilt. He held bi-nightly shoes in Las Vegas and in Lake Taho throughout the 1970's where people flocked from all over the world to attend his shows. Elvis had well over a thousand shows in Las Vegas. Many of these shows have been omitted (especially when he performed two shows a day for more than a month straight) in this mapstory to better show Elvis movement across the country.

UCPSARnet (geonode:UCPSARnet)
This map shows the growth of University-Community Partnership for Social Action Research(UCP-SARnet - http://ucpsarnet.org). This was initiated with the goal to create a Global network for sustainable development which is everybody working with everybody. To create such a collaboration one needs to start small and create some kind of a model for such network. So with a small group of people ASU decided to create an internet hub allowing individuals and organizations to connect with each other. This will not be an organization of any kind, but just a website that will allow to search for organizations according to certain amount of criteria. UCP-SARnet does not invite organizations to be a part of it, but just creates links to these organizations, later asking them to provide relevant criteria, if they wish to do it. The role of the coordinating team will be to provide the names of organizations that should be listed there, create the basic selection criteria and later contact them informing about the hub. This mapstory provides spatial information about organizations which are currently part of the UCP-SARnet.

bear2 (geonode:bear2)
Fatal bear attacks in North America have occurred in a variety of settings. There have been several in the bears' wilderness habitats involving hikers, hunters, and campers. Brown bear incidents have occurred in their native range spanning Alaska, Northern and Western Canada, and portions of the Rocky Mountains in the United States. The locations of black bear wilderness fatal attacks reflect their wider range: all Canadian Provinces except the Atlantic Provinces and several major mountainous areas in the United States. Bears held captive by animal trainers, in zoos, carnivals, or kept as pets have been responsible for several attacks. There have also been unusual cases in which a person entered a bear's cage, and was mauled. According to wildlife experts, bear attacks are rare. Attacks are for predatory, territorial, or protective reasons. Most wilderness attacks have occurred when there was only one to two persons in the vicinity. In this map three species of bear are recognized: the Brown Bear , the American Black Bear and the Polar Bear .

coral (geonode:coral)
Warmer water temperatures can result in coral bleaching. When water is too warm, corals will expel the algae (zooxanthellae) living in their tissues causing the coral to turn completely white. This is called coral bleaching. When a coral bleaches, it is not dead. Corals can survive a bleaching event, but they are under more stress and are subject to mortality. In 2005, the U.S. lost half of its coral reefs in the Caribbean in one year due to a massive bleaching event. The warm waters centered around the northern Antilles near the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico expanded southward. Comparison of satellite data from the previous 20 years confirmed that thermal stress from the 2005 event was greater than the previous 20 years combined. Not all bleaching events are due to warm water. In January 2010, cold water temperatures in the Florida Keys caused a coral bleaching event that resulted in some coral death. Water temperatures dropped 12.06 degrees Fahrenheit lower than the typical temperatures observed at this time of year. Researchers will evaluate if this cold-stress event will make corals more susceptible to disease in the same way that warmer waters impact corals.

county (geonode:county)
Over two hundred million trips are taken daily across deficient bridges in the nation’s 102 largest metropolitan regions. In total, one in nine of the nation’s bridges are rated as structurally deficient, while the average age of the nation’s 607,380 bridges is currently 42 years. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) estimates that to eliminate the nation’s bridge deficient backlog by 2028, we would need to invest $20.5 billion annually, while only $12.8 billion is being spent currently. The challenge for federal, state, and local governments is to increase bridge investments by $8 billion annually to address the identified $76 billion in needs for deficient bridges across the United States.
