NRW - Areas Affecting Bathing Waters (Areas_Affecting_Bathing_Waters)
This dataset comprises a polygon relating to each site identified under the Bathing Water Directive (76/160/EEC); however these polygons have no formal status under the Bathing Water Directive. Where a site corresponds to a Sensitive Area under the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (UWWTD) in England & Wales, the polygon for that Sensitive Area is provided. For all other sites the polygon has been drawn as a simple guide to aid the work of NRW with permitting of discharges. These polygons are not appropriate for identifying areas suitable for bathing. The polygons are not a definition of the extent of the bathing water under the Bathing Water Directives 76/160/EEC or 2006/7/EC and should not be used for any definition of the bathing water area or extent.

NRW - FishMapMon - Intensity - Casual Hand Gathering (FISHMAPMON_INTENSITY_CAS_HAND_GATHER)
These maps represent the Intensity of the fishing activity within each 1km² over one year. Fishing intensity is defined as the fishing effort within a given area (e.g. number of parlour pots lifted and dropped in a year per hectare). It is determined by collating all the information collected from fishers to calculate the annual footprint of activity (otherwise known as the total area fished per year) which is then divided by the mapped fishing area. The resultant fishing intensity is categorised into one of three levels; Level 1, 2 or 3. The three levels were agreed by stakeholders over the course of the Project and are intended to represent low, medium and high levels of fishing in Welsh waters (NB, the intensity levels relate to the number of times an area of seabed is impacted by fishing gear and do not relate to catch extents).

NRW - Lakes Inventory (GBLakesInventoryEnglandWales)
A geodatabase of lake polygons covering England and Wales, at 1:50k. Extracted from OS data. This is the English and Welsh subset of an inventory of standing waters (freshwater lakes and lochs) derived from Ordnance Survey digital map data at a scale of 1:50 000 and represents the most comprehensive survey of its kind for Great Britain. The inventory includes 43 738 water bodies in England, Scotland, Wales and the Isle of Man and contains basic physical data such as location, surface area, perimeter and altitude. Catchment areas were computed for water bodies with a surface area larger than 1 ha from a digital terrain model (DTM) using customised routines in a geographical information system (GIS). The resulting polygons were then used to derive catchment-related information from a variety of national datasets including population density, livestock density, land cover, solid and drift geology, meteorological data, freshwater sensitivity status, acid deposition and conservation status. Using data derived from the inventory a risk-based prioritisation protocol was developed to identify standing waters at risk of harm from acidification and eutrophication. This information is required by the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales, Scottish Environmental Protection Agency and the U.K. statutory conservation bodies to co-ordinate actions and monitor change under international, European and national legislation. OS Opendata was used in this dataset, and must be acknowledged in any onward use.

In 2015 the Marine Nature Reserve changed designation to Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ). This spatial dataset contains the digital boundaries of Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) former Marine Nature Reserves in Wales. MCZs and MNRs are a way of conserving marine habitats and wildlife and other features, of special importance, along the shore or on the seabed. Skomer, the first and only MNR in Wales, was established in 1990 and is situated around the island of Skomer and the Marloes Peninsula in south west Wales. The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 empowers NRW to apply to the First Minister for the National Assembly for Wales (NAW) to designate MNR. MNR may be governed by byelaws, created through discussions and mutual agreements with all concerned, and approved by WAG. MNR make a valuable contribution to the protection of our seas by creating an awareness of the fragility and value of the natural marine heritage.

Polygon data layer showing the extent of Saltmarsh in Coastal and Transitional waters for use by both Flood and Coastal Risk Management and the implementation of Water Framework Directive. Saltmarsh extent has been interpreted from 10cm by 10cm digital aerial imagery. The demarcation of the landward extent is the point at which the upper most zones gives way to terrestrial plants (often at the foot of a seawall). The mark is where saltmarsh plants become 5% of the predominantly terrestrial community. At the seaward end of the transect, the final demarcation will be where the saltmarsh vegetation cover has become so sparse it only covers 5% whether it is Upper, Mid, Lower or Pioneer saltmarsh.

NRW - Water Framework Directive Canals (Cycle 2) (NRW_WFD_CANALS_C2_LIVE)
NRW - Water Framework Directive Coastal Waterbodies (Cycle 1) (NRW_WFD_COASTAL)
WFD Coastal Waterbodies is a polygon dataset containing attributes that have been collated as defined for the implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD). This metadata record is for Approval for Access product AfA088. WFD Coastal Waterbodies 1st Cycle is a polygon Shapefile dataset defining coastal waterbodies for the implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD). Article 2, clause 7 of the WFD defines coastal waterbodies as 'a surface water on the landward side of a line, every point of which is at a distance of one nautical mile on the seaward side from the nearest point of the baseline from which the breadth of territorial waters is measured, extending where appropriate up to the outer limit of transitional waters'. Coastal waters were defined by territorial waters 1 nautical mile from the Mean High Water, and the coastline taken directly from OS 1:50K MeridianTM 2. The break between coastal and estuarine waters was delineated by the Environment Agency defined transitional waterbodies. Since waterbodies are attributed with a unique identifier (EA_WB_ID) this dataset can be linked directly to other WFD data sources such as physical characteristics, risk, classification and proposed objectives.

NRW - Water Framework Directive Lake Waterbodies (Cycle 1) (NRW_WFD_LAKES)
WFD Lake Waterbodies is a polygon Shapefile dataset containing Water Framework Directive (WFD) attributes that have been collated as defined for the implementation of the Water Framework Directive. Article 2, clause 5 of the WFD defines them as a body of standing inland surface water. There is data on the physical characteristics, risk, classification and proposed objectives that can be linked to waterbodies by their unique identifiers. Artificial and modified lake waterbodies are included within this dataset; however, generally only lakes above > 50 hectares were assessed under the WFD except for lakes in protected areas, where a minimum of 5.0ha was used. Lakes below this threshold are not included within this dataset unless allocated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) as supplied by Natural England. Each waterbody has been assigned EA_WB_ID, which is a unique identifier that enables a link to WFD attributes. These data apply to Cycle 1 of the Water Framework Directive.
NRW - Water Framework Directive Lake Waterbodies (Cycle 2) (NRW_WFD_LAKES_C2)

NRW - Water Framework Directive River Waterbodies (Cycle 2) (NRW_WFD_RIVERS_C2)
Features have been extracted from the DRN where they have been identified as belonging to a particular WFD waterbody, using the EA_WB_ID attribute on the DRNv3. The DRN is captured from the water features theme of the OS MasterMap topographic layer and built into a network using automated rules. Other input datasets and extensive local Environment Agency staff knowledge has been used to augment the core geometry to incorporate critical spatial detail and attribution, such as flow direction and path, not available from the OS mapping and to verify the accuracy of the centreline itself. Sections of DRN belonging to a particular waterbody have been merged together so that a defined waterbody is a single record within the dataset (rather than being made up of hundreds of records within the DRN). DRN attributes become obsolete at this point and waterbody specific attribution has been added. Therefore the geometry for the resulting waterbodies is taken from the DRN, but the attribution and number of records is very different. Not all sections of the DRN belong to defined waterbodies and the final WFD river waterbody dataset represents <20% of the online DRN. This dataset also now incorporates the WFD canal and surface water transfer datasets which were previously treated as separate AFAd datasets.

NRW - Water Framework Directive Transitional Waterbodies (Cycle 1) (NRW_WFD_TRANSITIONAL)
WFD Transitional (Estuarine) Waterbodies is a polygon dataset containing attributes that have been collated as defined for the implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD). Article 2, clause 6 of the WFD defines them as bodies of surface water in the vicinity of river mouths which are partly saline in character as a result of their proximity to coastal waters but are substantially influenced by freshwater flows. Transitional waterbodies were defined from Mean High Water boundaries, taken directly from OS 1:50K MeridianTM 2, and Environment Agency estuarine boundaries defined for the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (UWWTD). Since waterbodies are attributed with a unique identifier (EA_WB_ID) this dataset can be linked directly to other WFD data sources such as physical characteristics, risk, classification and proposed objectives. These data apply to Cycle 1 of the Water Framework Directive.
